Frequently Asked Questions

Will you turn me into a chicken?

As a remedial hypnotist I often get asked "Will you turn me into a chicken?". The answer is "no"! I will not turn you into a chicken or make you dance like Elvis (unless those activities are actually one of your wellbeing, performance or personal growth goals).

Why do people think you'll turn them into a chicken?

That's because most people's understanding or experience of hypnosis is what they see on TV or in movies where hypnosis is used to entertain an audience. That's called 'stage hypnosis'.

The hypnosis we use is 'clinical hypnosis' or 'hypnotherapy' and it is used one-on-one to fast track and embed behavioural change in an individual. During hypnotherapy you are in a relaxed but highly focused state. You are always in control and you can stop the process should you wish to. "Will you turn me into a chicken?"

I will not turn you into a chicken or make you dance like Elvis (unless those activities are actually one of your wellbeing, performance or personal growth goals).

What is Strategic Psychotherapy?

Strategic Psychotherapy is a highly effective and rapid form of talk therapy where the therapist strategically works with their client to help them recognise how they may be creating their own problems, challenges and limitations because of how they respond to situations and events.

A key part of Strategic Psychotherapy is helping the client to identify experiential gaps and behavioural patterns they are running that may be supporting their issues, and then developing a strategic approach that activates existing strengths and resources within them to overcome these challenges.

"It is not the event that creates the problem, it’s the response to the event that creates the problem."

Strategic Psychotherapy lays a great foundation for impactful and effective intervention — especially when used in conjunction with other techniques such as Coaching, Counselling and Clinical Hypnotherapy.

What is Remedial or Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Clinical Hypnotherapy is a remedial form of hypnosis (guided relaxation, intense concentration, and focused attention) to achieve a heightened state of awareness that is sometimes called a trance. Hypnosis is a natural, familiar state. You have probably been in a state of hypnosis without noticing it... those times when you 'zone out', eg. driving, watching TV, listening to music, reading a book, or getting deeply engaged in an activity.

In order to help you overcome issues and challenges in your life that are a result of how you respond to situations and people around you, we use a combination of Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy to facilitate, accelerate and strengthen neuroplasticity - your brain's ability to bypass and change negative behavioural patterns and habits deeply engrained in your subconscious.

You enter a natural highly focused, meditative state - you do not fall asleep and you are always in control - in which you can experience things differently and be more open to suggestions and alternative views (that we identify and explore during the Strategic Psychotherapy process) as you access your subconscious.

What issues can be addressed using Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy?

Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy can be used to help a client address a wide range of issues such as Addiction, Anxiety, Attitude, Confidence & Self Belief, Depression, Fear, Grief, Food & Alcohol Consumption, Health & Fitness, Motivation, Pain & Injury Management, Performance, Relationships, Sleep, Sport, Study & Learning and Trauma.

How long does it take for me to feel any change?

Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy are amongst the fastest ways to change behaviour. They are called 'brief therapies'. Typically we can address your presenting issue with 3 sessions, sometimes less.

Most people say that they feel some kind of improvement or change during their first session.

How long has Clinical Hypnotherapy been used?

The practice of hypnotherapy has been used to heal and help with medical issues for thousands of years:

  • In 1550BC the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus (an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge) described trance-based healing,
  • Treatment of amputees in the American Civil War
  • Helping soldiers to overcome shell-shock in World War One

Today, Clinical Hypnotherapy is used to address a huge range of issues such as anxiety, phobias, substance abuse (including smoking), sexual dysfunction, undesirable spontaneous behaviours, teeth grinding, bed wetting, insomnia, fear of flying and bad habits. It can be used to resolve medical conditions such as digestive disorders, skin issues and side effects of things like pregnancy and chemotherapy. It can be used by doctors and dentists not only to allay fears but also for pain management and to create a state of anaesthesia.

Beyond medicine, and especially when used in conjunction with Strategic Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy is successfully used in business, career coaching, counselling, education, personal and professional development, relationships and sport.

How much do Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy cost?

Different therapists have different pricing structures, ranging from $120 an hour to $400 an hour.

At Headland we try to keep things simple and affordable. Depending on the approach we choose for you and your situation, session fees average out at about $200 a session.

What happens during a Strategic Psychotherapy and/or Clinical Hypnotherapy session?

Strategic Psychotherapy

UNDERSTANDING WHAT'S GOING ON AND WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE

During your fee-free consultation and first session we will discuss what's going on in your life and what you would like to change. During our discussions we will identify the source of your issues and highlight your abilities and processes to overcome them. During these discussions we may also use techniques like drawing, automatic writing, foveal trance and intuitive prime.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

ACTIVATING AND EMBEDDING CHANGE

I will then guide you into a state of relaxed yet heightened focus - for some people this is a deep trance, for others it feels simply like being highly concentrated or aware. When you are in this state we can access and work with your subconscious mind and bypass deep rooted behaviours and replace them with new thought patterns and processes.

You remain in complete control throughout the session and everything is recorded so that you have a copy to take away and listen to between our sessions - it's part of the process.

Are Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy safe?

When conducted by a trained therapist or health care professional, Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy are considered safe, complementary and alternative treatments for most people unless they have a severe mental illness.

Adverse reactions to hypnosis are rare, but may include headaches.

During Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy the client is always in control, always conscious and always able to stop the session.

Can Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy be used for more than healing?

Yes! Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy can be used in far more situations than healing.

They are successfully used in business, career coaching, counselling, education, personal and professional development, relationships and sport.

They can be used to help improve learning, communication, public speaking and relationships.

Many high flying entrepreneurs and executives rely on Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy to overcome self-doubt, create a compelling business future and realise their goals.

When is hypnotherapy used to boost athletic performance?

For years athletes have used hypnotherapy to overcome issues and improve performance without having to use performance-enhancing drugs to overcome nerves, focus attention, increase endurance, develop mental stamina, increase motivation, maximise muscle memory, and so on. The 1956 Russian Olympic team had 11 hypnotherapists and won more medals than anyone else (they may have used other methods too!). Both golfer Jack Nicklaus and tennis ace Andre Agassi used hypnosis as part of their winning formula.

Do Strategic Psychotherapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy work for children and teenagers?

The dynamic approach and incorporation of other techniques and activities works well for clients of all ages, from all kinds of backgrounds at home, at work, at school and anywhere else in between.

At The Happy dad Project we also work with teens and young adults in order to reduce the stress and burden on their dads.

The Happy Dad Project

What is the Happy Dad Project?

Every dad is different, every family is different and we all experience the world in own way, but one thing seems to be true... we want our kids to be safe and happy, and most of us would like that for ourselves too!

And that's what the Happy Dad Project is all about: helping you to embrace fatherhood with greater clarity, courage and confidence and create a happier enivronment for yourself and your family.

What makes the Happy Dad Project unique?

It's great to see more and more self-help resources and support groups for dads. However, sometimes it can be hard to create the momentum you need to make significant and sustainable change.

As a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, I found myself working with an increasing number of dads who are struggling with the challenges of fatherhood. I now specialise in working with dads.

How the Happy Dad Project works

We will work through single sessions and personalised programs during which we tackle specific issues or we work through a more general approach to understand and address why parenthood may not be going the way you'd like.

I use a range of proven, drug-free approaches that enable you to rapidly access and reprogram patterns of behaviour and thinking that may be holding you back from being the dad you want to be.

Many of these techniques have been used in healing for thousands of years. Today they’re also used to create behavioural change and promote mental wellbeing in business, coaching, counselling, education, health & fitness, personal growth, professional development, psychology, relationships, sport and more.

The process takes place in a safe, confidential space where anything can be said, everything is heard and nothing is judged.

Do you only work with dads?

My focus is working with dads, but I also work with kids and mums.

I work with young adults who may be struggling with anger issues or running negative patterns of behaviour... basically things that have a negative impact on the family dynamic and place greater pressure on fathers. My work with mums typically focuses on weight loss, exercise and alcohol consumption.
